I used the development version of Inkscape which, combined with my tablet, made drawing the hair a breeze.
After I completed the head I started on the body and I got very lazy because I wasn't really sure how to colour him properly. Perhaps someday the shame will become too much and I'll do it properly.
I hope you're using the new version of Illustrator--it has on-canvas editing of gradient. I actually took up using Inkscape because Illustrators handling of gradients was so frustrating
CS3 is the only version my University is willing to cough up the money for, and I agree. But I figured out how to mess with the gradation tool pretty quickly. That is, after fighting with it in Inkscape first, (didn't realize there was a tool for it. XD; But right now, we're doing vector self portraits and dot vectors(?) [not quite sure what the other one is, just that it has to do with dots.] So I might mess with that tool, once I get a descent pic of myself. And thanks for the heads up on the versions though!
Yeah, I liked him as a float head also. Although, I didn't like as a floating head he looked more like a logo or clipart rather than a complete picture to be posted on DA.
This is actually my first work in a long time that is completely mine, so I might post his head on openclipart.org.
